Project Objective

Tragically, Themba has suffered a severe fracture of her distal humerus (the bone above her elbow). She is one of only about 7,100 cheetahs remaining in the wild across Africa — every life is crucial for the future of this endangered species.

Meet Themba, a wild cheetah cub only 11 months old, daughter of a successful mother and sister to four other cubs. Her name, Themba, means “Hope, Trust, Believe” in both Zulu and Xhosa, South African languages.

The Incident

On 3 July, the Wild Spirit Vet Team led by Dr Brendan Tindal the owner of Robberg Veterinary Clinic, and co-founder of Wild Spirit Foundation, was urgently called to assess Themba after she was seen limping and unable to bear weight on her front leg. Despite her injury, Themba was in good body condition, but she does not hunt on her own yet and remains dependent on her mother. Without hesitation, the team decided to chemically immobilize her using a dart in order to perform a clinical examination. Under anaesthesia, it was clear that her elbow region was swollen and painful with a possibility of a dislocation or fracture within the joint. However, without X-rays in the field, a proper diagnosis was impossible. Themba was carefully transported in a cheetah crate to the nearest suitable veterinary hospital. Once there, X-rays confirmed a severe distal humerus fracture that will require urgent orthopedic surgery and a dedicated rehabilitation process. Waking in the crate, ready to leave the field, Themba called for her family. Our hearts broke, and we promised to fight for her.

Why This Matters

Cheetahs rely on their incredible speed and agility to hunt and survive. A fracture like this threatens not just Themba’s life, but also her potential to ever return to the wild.

Our mission now is to give her the best possible medical care, surgery, and rehabilitation, to try to save her future:

01

Temporary confinement prior to transfer to hospital

02

1000km relocation to the best surgical facility

03

Urgent surgery to repair the fracture

04

Hospitalization and intensive post-surgery care

05

Feeding and medical costs during recovery

06

Rehabilitation to assess if she can safely run and hunt again

07

Rewilding support (including GPS collar monitoring and reserve costs) if she recovers enough to be released OR lifelong care in a reputable rescue centre if returning to the wild proves impossible
If Themba cannot be returned to the wild, she will become a vital ambassador for her species — helping raise awareness and contributing to conservation through potential future breeding with the release of her cubs back into the wild.

Funding Goal

To cover Themba’s emergency medical needs and secure her future, we urgently need to raise:

The target budget for the first critical 6 months is ZAR 210,000 🇿🇦 (USD 11,800 🇺🇸 / EUR 10,100 🇪🇺).

This will cover:

💉

Specialist surgery and anesthesia

🏥

Hospitalization and post-surgical care

✈️

Transport to a specialist facility

🩺

Hospitalization and intensive post-surgery care

👩‍⚕️

Ongoing rehabilitation

🍃

Costs for rewilding (monitoring collars, release support) or long-term sanctuary care if rewilding is impossible
Together, we can give Themba a fighting chance. Help us save her life and protect the future of her species.
